Jesus commands His disciples and followers to be salt and light in the world. In the ancient world and Jesus’ day, salt was a rare, sacred, and precious commodity that served manifold purposes and three specifically―preservation, flavor, and usefulness. Even today, salt has value, significance, usefulness, and serves thousands of purposes. It is mentioned by Jesus often in the Bible to describe His disciples.
 
Salt is a purifying, preserving, and seasoning agent that is essential and necessary in life. As believers, Christians, and disciples of Jesus Christ, we are mandated by Him to be salt of the earth. It is our vocation and commission as followers of Jesus Christ. Like salt, we are to purify this corrupt and decaying world through the power and presence of God, proclamation of the gospel, and by example and ways of righteous and holy living. Just as salt preserves, Christians are to counteract spiritual and moral decay happening in the world through the way that we live, love, and lead by Christ’s example. We are to be a preserving and powerful influence in the world through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our faith in Christ and representation of Him through godly character and conduct, words and deeds, and love and compassion toward others should influence, enhance, and preserve the world just as salt does in the purposes that it serves.
 
Do not lose your saltiness―passion, purpose, and witness for Jesus Christ through unrighteous living, immoral behavior, and disobedience to God. Do not lose your flavor―spiritual fervor, preservation, usefulness, and effectiveness in the kingdom of God nor culture and world that we live in. If salt loses its flavor, it is useless, purposeless, and worthless. Be SALTY, stay SALTY! Your presence is useful, purposeful, beneficial, and powerful in making an impact and difference in the kingdom of God, the world, and life of the believer who needs to repent, be saved, and have a relationship with Jesus Christ.
 
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
